A Study Group in Mathematical Modelling with Industry

BIOREME have teamed up with The Insigneo Institute and The Knowledge Transfer Network to deliver a study group in mathematical modelling.

The study group will bring together 30 – 50 research scientists working in academia (expected minimum PhD candidate level) with expertise in mathematical modelling to work intensively for 3.5 days on real-world problems from industry and clinical settings. The main goal of the study group is to provide an interface between companies, clinicians and mathematicians to develop mathematical tools to solve the problems presented. You can find out more about the history and benefit of Study Groups in The Institute of Mathematics article “Study Groups with Industry: What is the Value?”

Where:

Day 1, 17 April, Workroom 3, The Diamond, The University of Sheffield, S3 7RD

Day 2 - 4, 18 - 20 April, John Carr Design Suite, The Portobello Centre, The University of Sheffield, S1 4DT

When: 17 April 2023 - 20 April 2023

Cost: Registration is free. Lunch and refreshments are provided throughout the event. You can apply to our Event Support Fund when you register if travel and accommodation costs are a barrier for your attendance.

Research Challenges

We are delighted to publish the research challenges that will be tackled in this study group presented by Industry. These challenges fall within the theme of lung function measurement:

  • BIOREME invite you to submit your real world challenges to be tackled by research scientists with expertise in mathematical modelling.

Please look at the Challenge Owners Booklet for more information on the Study Group Format, example challenges and challenge submission process.

    Key Dates

    31/01/23: Submission deadline

    01/02/23 – 20/02/23: Interviews/discussion

    28/02/23: Selection of challenges

    01/03/23 – 31/03/23: Revision and refinement process

    Costs

There is no cost to participate as an Industry or Clinical Representative submitting a challenge. Reasonable travel and accommodation costs can be covered by BIOREME where this is a barrier to your attendance.

    Challenge Owners Booklet

Challenge submission for this study group has now closed, but there are still places to participate as a researcher, see below.

  • We invite academic researchers (at least PhD candidate level or equivalent) to register for this event. We welcome researchers from a range of backgrounds including statistical methods, biomechanics, biophysics, computational modelling, medical imaging and lung function/ breath content measurement.

Participants are not required to have specific experience in the real-world challenges presented, they must have relevant transferrable skills (in the areas listed above) to tackle new challenges in their domain of expertise.

More information can be found in Participants Information Booklet which will be updated with challenge information as these become available.

    Key Dates

01/03/23: Confirmation of Challenges from industry and clinicians

24/03/23: Deadline for application to event support fund

    06/04/2023: Deadline for registration

    Costs

There is no cost to participate as an academic researcher. You will be provided with lunch and refreshments each day, there will also be a drinks reception and an evening meal provided on day 1.

Travel and accommodation costs are not covered but you can apply to our Event Support Fund when registering.
