Engaging local schools with maths and lungs

This month BIOREME have been busy participating in outreach events local to The University of Nottingham, engaging young people with our research.

Family Discovery Day, 16th June 2024

Prof Bindi Brook, Anne Canning and James Shemilt ran an interactive stall at a family discovery day hosted at The University of Nottingham. We welcomed 230 students and their families from local primary schools to visit stalls on a range subjects with hands-on activities.

At the BIOREME stall students engaged with Bindi who used physical airway models to explain what happens under an asthma attack and the effect of taking medicine. James took students through a simple experiment using weights and springs explaining elasticity in the lungs. Anne encouraged students to pump up our lung models to understand what happens when airways are restricted. Students designed and made their own lung models using paper bags and straws.

I never knew maths could be used in this way, to understand the lungs

The BIOREME activity stall

We really enjoyed ourselves and it was brilliant to share our research with an enthusiastic audience of young people. We received some excellent feedback and will update this page with participant feedback and photos once it comes available in the coming weeks.
