Dr Löndahl is a senior researcher in aerosol technology at the Department of Design sciences at Lund University and director of the Aerosol Lab at LU. His research centres on the medical and health applications of aerosols including in disease transmission, pollution exposure, and the measurement of lung disease. Together with Prof. Per Wollmer he is inventor of the Airspace Dimension Assessment (AiDA), which is a novel instrument for diagnosis of lung disease. He is Director of the Aerosol and Climate Laboratory at LTH and a Principle Investigator of the Nanolund: Center for Nanoscience.
Title: Experimental studies of respiratory tract deposition of aerosol particles in healthy volunteers and patients with lung disease
Abstract: Knowledge about the deposition of airborne particles in the lungs is a key to understand effects of exposure to air pollution as well as estimating delivered dose from inhaled medicine. The majority of all research on deposition of inhaled particles in the respiratory tract has focused on healthy young adults. Nevertheless, it is typically other groups that are most affected, namely, patients with lung disease, elderly and children. These groups exhibit considerable differences in deposition of inhaled particles compared to healthy adults. This presentation will provide a summary of several experimental studies conducted over the past fifteen years, aimed at enhancing our understanding of aerosol deposition in vulnerable populations.
