Patient insight survey
Patient perspectives on living well with a lung condition
Asthma + Lung UK collaborated with the BIOREME network to conduct a patient insights survey to understand patient priorities and perspectives on lung conditions, focusing on asthma, COPD, and related diseases. The survey explored themes identified in patient focus groups, led by Asthma + Lung UK in July 2022 and was completed by 265 participants.
The key findings encompass three main themes:
Quality of Life
This survey sought to better understand what quality of life means to patients so that we can ensure any work we undertake to improve outcomes is done so in a way that meaningfully contributes to improved quality of life. Seven overarching themes were identified;Autonomy and Freedom, Independence, Physical Activity, Social Connections, Purpose and Contribution, A (New?) Normal Life, and Absence of Worry. The survey highlights patients' desire for a holistic approach to care, emphasizing factors like mental health, social connections, and daily activities.
Monitoring and Managing lung conditions
Monitoring and self-management are crucial for effective control of lung conditions, and this survey aimed to comprehend patient perspectives, barriers, and preferences regarding these aspects. A notable, 31.7% of patients feel their conditions receive inadequate attention. Patients expressed interest in receiving assistance with monitoring device techniques and emphasized the importance of developing new measures aligned with their feelings.
Medication
This survey delved into medication concerns among individuals with lung conditions, with the long-term impact of oral steroids being a prominent worry
The findings stress the importance of patient-centric approaches in future research and propose measures to enhance care and support for those living with chronic lung conditions. The key findings can be found here.
